My name is Sherri. I am mom to Christopher and the power behind the chair when we do events (about 150 pounds total between him and his chair). Ty is my husband, dad to Christopher, and an important part of the crew. His job is to travel near the course of each event and be able to get Christopher should problems arise- unexpected hill, too worn out to make it up a hill, seizure, change of clothing, weather, etc. Christopher- he giggles, laughs, makes his sounds, has a drink or snack, listens to his movie player, and enjoys the fresh air when we walk/run in events. We are not a fast paced team but we are hoping to improve. We are just happy to be a part of it all and to finish! We adopted Christopher when he was three years old. He is 19 years old now. His diagnoses include: fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS - see our FAS page for information on this), severe-profound mental retardation (from the FAS) austism, seizure disorder. Christopher can walk but only short distances. He didn't start walking until he was 6 years old. If he is upset or extremely happy- he cannot walk at all! When Christopher first came to live with us he cried 16 hours a day and the only thing he did intentional was to crawl out of a room of people and bang his head on the wall. We knew all of this going in. He doesn't talk or have a traditional form of communication (sign language etc). Toilet training has not worked either. Christopher is such a tender soul. When he gets the giggles- everything makes him laugh, when he is done with the giggles- he is done. He is a momma's boy! He likes to tease his dad. He loves his siblings: Tiffany, Morris, Duane, Dale, and Troy. And he really loves his sister-in-law Courtney!! (he has a little crush) Christopher loves to be outside and enjoys camping, 4-wheeler rides (although these can be difficult), and s'mores. He loves to sit on mom's lap at a campfire. He likes M&M's, a long legged stuffed animal (he chews on these) and blankets. He chews on his shirts if we do not give him a small flannel blanket to chew on. He loves movies- especially ones with good music in it. His all time fav is finding nemo, but enjoys cars, brother bear, and other good Disney movies. He likes music with a good beat. We are so blessed to have him in our lives. We have learned so much, and are so thankful to be a part of his life. I feel sorry for those who never get a chance to meet him, for those who don't take the time to know him. Oh the things they are missing out on. One day we will communicate with each other, we will understand each other and have a great conversation! I know he will point out a few things at that time! Christopher's siblings come and help out at the events as part of our crew when they can. Most of them are off in the world and living that adult life, marriage, college, work, etc. Christopher has sat on the side lines of all their events so this is his turn to do something. His sister, Tiffany, might be seen running 5k's at the events or helping out during half marathons- running stuff from the Christopher's Crew truck to me and Christopher. He loves to hear all the cheering- sometimes you will see his enjoyment and sometimes he is quiet about it all. But know it is appreciated by the entire crew! Please feel free to ask us anything through our facebook page "Christopher's Crew" or click the link and email us! we love to hear from people! Check out the rest of our site as we build it up. We will be photos soon. So please check back. Also a calendar of our events- the walking/running events we are registered to participate in. Christopher's Crew |
